Leyton Orient continue their preparations ahead on the new season with a friendly match against Gateshead tonight (7:30pm kick-off).
Like Orient, Gateshead suffered play-off heartbreak as they missed out on promotion to League Two. Gary Mills led the Heed to a third-placed finish in the Conference in his first season in charge. They booked their place at Wembley Stadium by defeating Grimsby Town 4-2 over two legs. They then met Cambridge United in the final, but lost 2-1.
Gateshead have already played six friendlies already this summer, winning five of those fixtures, including a 2-0 victory over a Newcastle United XI. Last time out The Heed defeated Dunston UTS 2-0 thanks to goals from Lewis Guy and Jon Shaw.
Gary Mills has been busy revamping his squad, adding nine players so far. His squad boasts league experience, with players such as Lewis Guy and John Oster in their ranks.
Leyton Orient began their pre-season with a 2-3 win over Dartford on Friday night. Lloyd James grabbed an impressive brace in the first half, but the hosts were able to reduce the deficit before the break. A different eleven (apart from goalkeeper Adam Legzdins who managed an hour before being replaced by Gary Woods) started the second half. Youngster Scott Kashket impressed and he was rewarded with a goal from the spot after winning a penalty. The Darts caught the O’s out on the break to add a second, but they couldn’t muster an equaliser. The referee ended the match a couple of minutes early due to lightning.
On Sunday the squad travelled to Northumberland for a training camp. New signing Shane Lowry joined his new teammates, but it is thought that trialists George Elokobi and Valentin Gjokaj did not travel. Neither Scott Cuthbert nor Nathan Clarke played on Friday, but they could be included against Gateshead.
