Nigel Atangana played youth football with Bry FC, St-Quentin-en-Yvelines, FC Flerien and Caen.
Atangana had trials with clubs in England including Luton Town, Gillingham, West Bromwich Albion and Grays Athletic but he eventually returned to France.
He made his senior debut at US Avranches in the fifth tier of French football and he went on to make 10 appearances before joining divisional rivals SU Dives. However, he made just 14 appearances for the club over two seasons.
Atangana then moved to Girona FC but he was sent to play in their reserve side CF Riudellots. He played 32 games before returning to France.
He then signed for US Gravelines and made 21 appearances for the club during the 2012/13.
Nigel returned to England for a trial with Bury and though he was unsuccessful he signed for conference south side Havant & Waterlooville in September 2013.
He scored five goals for the Hawks in 43 games and at the end of the 2013/14 campaign he was named as the club’s player of the year.
In June 2014 Atangana signed for Portsmouth for an undisclosed fee despite rumoured interest from Peterborough and Charlton. Last term he made 35 appearances for Pompey and it was during that year that he scored his only goal for the club, an equaliser against Cheltenham Town.
Atangana played 13 games for Pompey this term as he found himself down the pecking order at Fratton Park. His last appearance was against Carlisle towards the end of November. Portsmouth boss Paul Cook had reportedly told the Frenchman that his contract would not be renewed and as a result it was likely that he would leave this month.
Crawley Town and Ebbsfleet were rumoured to be interested in signing Nigel, but the O’s have managed to secure his signature. Atangana is eligible to make his Orient debut on Saturday under caretaker manager Andy Hessenthaler.
