Josh Coulson began his career with Cherry Hinton Lions before joining the youth set-up at Cambridge City.
Coulson soon moved to the youth academy at Cambridge United. Josh made his senior debut for the U’s in October 2007 in a 2-2 draw with Halifax Town. He went on to make 16 more appearances for the club during the 2007/08 season.
Josh continued to feature intermittently for the first team in 2008/09, playing 14 times. In the summer of 2009, Martin Ling became the new U’s boss. In Ling’s first season, Coulson made 23 appearances and scored his first goal in senior football during the campaign. During Martin’s second season in charge, Josh featured even more prominently for the U’s, playing 44 games that year.
From then on, Josh has been a regular for Cambridge United. He played 53 times in 2013/14 as the U’s won promotion back to the Football League via the Conference play-offs and Cambridge also won the FA Trophy.
During 2014/15 Coulson was ever present during the League Two campaign and was named as the U’s player of the year.
Last term, Josh made 25 appearances as his on-field action was limited by an ankle injury which ended his season in November.
A week ago, Cambridge marked Coulson’s ten-years with the club by handing Josh a testimonial match against Tottenham Hotspur’s Under-23s. The U’s lost 2-3.
Coulson is the thirteenth new addition of the summer and his arrival marks Orient’s first foray into the loan market. O’s boss Steve Davis had previously spoken of the need to recruit an experienced central defender. Coulson could well appear in Orient’s pre-season friendly against Billericay Town tomorrow (Saturday).
